Top Tips – Things you should never do in a new Job

  1. Make sure you have a positive ‘can-do’ attitude!
Employers like to see team players.  Productivity can be seriously affected by negative employees.  Positivity can bread new ideas and energy into any workforce.
  2. Don’t go in thinking you know it all!
Never assume that you know better than someone else.  First impressions can last forever, be friendly and polite.
  3. Go in with an open mind!
No job is too small. Listen, engage, learn and above all show your new colleagues that you appreciate their support.  They have more experience of doing the job than you have and they understand the company ethos.
  4. Starting at the bottom!
Very few people come out of education into a 3 figure salary.  Most have to start at the bottom and work their way up.  Embrace the photocopying and making the team, you have to start somewhere.  Grab the opportunities as they present themselves and work hard.
  5. Be yourself!
We all want to fit in, but it will take time.  Focus your time on learning your new job.  Relax and listen and you will impress over time.
  6. Believe in yourself!
You got your new job by showing the right skill set and attitude at your interview.  First day nerves are natural, so make sure you are prepared the night before.  The last thing you need is a stressful morning and ending up running late.
  7. Nobody is perfect!
We all make mistakes.  The most important thing is to learn from those mistakes, which in turn will build your experience.  Take ownership of your mistake and find a solution.  Don’t be too hard on yourself.
  8. Don’t dirty your doorstep!
You never know when you may need a good reference.  If your new job doesn’t work out how you hoped, maintain your professionalism and don’t leave under a cloud.
