Promoting better Relationships at Work

At our heart, most of us are by nature, social creatures.  However, the rules change when you can’t choose who you wish to be social with.  At home you can choose your circle of friends but in a workplace scenario you are likely to be around people that you wouldn’t naturally choose as friends or acquaintances.

In the workplace you need to make an effort to understand what skills and abilities your colleagues have.  The expression ‘first impressions count’, couldn’t be more true, so make sure from day one you start as you mean to go on and foster new workplace acquaintances.  Have a good attitude at work, nobody likes working around someone who is negative.  As you get to know your colleagues and do a good job, they will learn to trust you.

Some tips to improve workplace relationships.

  1. Be friendly and encouraging.
  2. If you say you are going to do something, make sure you do.  If you can’t complete your task, ask for help and communicate with the rest of your team.
  3. Be considered of your colleagues, especially if you share an office or small work space.  Everybody works differently, you may need loud music and chatter, where others will prefer to work in silence to accomplish their task.
  4. Do not fall into office gossip. You will get found out, gossips always do.  Don’t be known as the office gossip, mud sticks.
  5. Of course you are not going to get on with everybody!  But, try to remain professional and open.
  6. Above all, communicate, no one is a mind-reader.

“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.”– Albert Einstein
