How to achieve a Work Life Balance

How to achieve a Work Life Balance

Achieving a work life balance is not easy in an ever increasing high work load environment.  It is very important to find some balance and time for both work and the many other parts of your life.  From an employers point of you offering a flexible working arrangement has great business benefits, increased productivity, improvements in performance, better morale and lower levels of stress and sickness.

So how do you achieve a perfect work life balance?

  1. Prioritise work tasks.  Try and determine what the most important tasks of the day and allow sufficient time to achieve them.  Schedule out less important jobs for a later date.  This will help you keep on top of your workload.
  2. Structure your day.  Once you have prioritised your work load, try grouping similar jobs together.  This will allow you to get high priority jobs done first, then the medium priorities.  You can then allocated your breaks around this and comfortably meet all your deadlines.
  3. Take breaks.  It is so important to take regular breaks at work.  Not only for your body but your mind.  If you only have a lunch hour, go for a walk or catch up with work friends.  Maybe instead of a lunch break you could take regular shorter breaks throughout the day, allowing you to take care of any personal jobs you don’t have time to do before or after work.
  4. Holidays.  Make sure you use your annual holidays.  You need this time away from your job to relax, unwind and spend time with family and friends.
  5. Technology.  Does it take you 2 hours to get to work and the same again on the way home?  Consider taking a day or two working from home.  If you don’t need to be face to face to complete your jobs then this could be the ideal solution.  However, don’t get caught up in the trap of answering emails and phone calls after hours.  Just because it is accessible 24 hours a day, it doesn’t mean you are.

All work and no play can leave you stressed and feeling unhappy.  Talk to your employer about your ideas.  Look at your tasks and work out a better time management strategy.  Then request the meeting.
