Getting the working environment right is the best way to foster loyalty and boost team spirit. The right induction will save time and get better results in the long run.
There are four key points to bear in mind:
1) Ensure you meet your new employee as soon as possible after they arrive and start developing a rapport. Make sure they know they can come to you with any initial concerns and schedule some catch-up meetings over the coming weeks to cement the welcome.
2) Don’t just dump and run! Start with the basics and show them where the parking bays, restroom facilities and kitchen space are before showing them their work station. Introduce them to their team so they know who they are working with. Make sure they know how the working day is structured
3) Give them a named colleague as a point of contact when you are not there to help with any minor queries such as operating machinery or working with new software, so they don’t just sit there struggling – they have someone they know will help.
4) Check you’ve got it right and ask the employee to let you know how they are settling in and that the induction has been a success.
