Advice on filling out an Application Form

After spending hours researching how to best write your CV and honing it down to perfection, you may feel a little annoyed that when applying for a job you may have to fill out an application form.  Replicating all your information will feel repetitive and time-consuming.

Many big employees now favour the Application Form and it is actually a brilliant way to demonstrate your skills and strengths in a format that the employer wants.  You need to strictly stick to the guidance of the application form and use it to your advantage to show your main selling points.

Here are some pointers:-

  1. Suitability – You can of course go through the motions and work your way through the never ending form and transfer information from your CV.  However, think more carefully about the questions you are being asked.  The questions are crafted in such a way to encourage you to sell yourself and prove that you are a suitable candidate for the job.  Refer back to the job description, try and match your experience and skills to the answer.
  2. Experience – When asked to prove your experience, try and use actual real-life examples.  Remember it is you writing your application form, not we or our, always try and use I and me.
  3. Skills – Remember your well-honed CV? Transfer your skills to the application form.  Make sure you don’t leave anything important out.  Focus on the skills that are specific to your industry.
  4. Knowledge – Your need to prove your knowledge in your application form.  Read up on the latest news and innovations in your industry, use the right terminology and isms to show you are knowledgeable and current.
  5. Results – When listing your achievements, make sure you can back them up with example of how it benefited your previous employer.  ‘i.e’, how you transformed a process that ultimately generated more revenue.
  6. Communication – Demonstrate your communication skills with well-structured sentences and professionalism.  Anyone can say ‘I have strong communication skills’.  Prove it!
